Shoyu (salty)

The shoyu sauce is a central ingredient in Japanese cuisine and beyond. It is recognisable by its dark colour and rich, umami flavour. The shoyu is made from soybeans and wheat mixed with water and salt. The mixture is then left to ferment naturally for a period ranging from at least one year to 38 years before being pressed. Shoyu sauce can be used in marinades, sauces, soups and dressings, or as a condiment.

Salty shoyu is the most common type in our selection of Japanese soy sauce.
